Open Call: Residence Masterclass 'Spacemakers #8'

11-04-2025

Theme: 'Breaking Your Own Bias'

Are you a young artist, graduated from art school for more than two years and in need of a period of deepening? Then this is your chance to invest in the artistic development of your professional practice! During Spacemakers 8: ‘Breaking Your Own Bias’, the supporting artist Popel Coumou will help you further with the questions within your artistic practice.

With the Keep an Eye Spacemakers project, Galerie Pouloeuff organizes a short artist residency every summer. The eighth edition of this small-scale residency-masterclass offers an intensive working period for artists throughout September. Within this time frame, you will work with the other artists to develop new insights and new work. The residency concludes with a joint exhibition at Galerie Pouloeuff.

If this sounds like something for you, please apply via email: mail.ons@galeriepouloeuff.nl

Leave your own beaten path and seek depth in your working method and project.

Sometimes it is hard to leave your own beaten track and do things you are not used to. This edition of Keep an Eye Spacemakers is the ultimate opportunity to completely immerse yourself in your work with other artists and try out whatever comes to mind, like a pressure cooker. By increasing your work pace, taking all the side paths you come across along the way and carrying out (if possible) everything that comes to mind, you can also surprise yourself with what else is possible within your own discipline.

In this working period, under the guidance of Popel Coumou, you will explore and shape your own plan and look for new possibilities within your own practice. By not being afraid to do and make stupid or ugly things, you can bring yourself to new insights that you would not have discovered if you kept repeating what you already know.

With all participants, each week we will look at the ‘in your eyes’ failures and successes. Sometimes you will come to the realization that the failures are the most interesting and perhaps even the biggest pearls you could not have imagined beforehand. You can then apply some or all of these in your work. We will work

The residency period

The residency period runs from September 1 to 27. During this period, the exhibition space of Galerie Pouloeuff will function as a joint working and living space. Together with the other artists, you will set up the exhibition here at the end of the working period with the work you created during the masterclass. The exhibition will take place from September 28 to October 26. The opening of this exhibition will be on Sunday September 28. During this opening, you will have the chance to tell visitors more about the work you made and what you learned during the work period.

About Popel Coumou

With her work, Popel Coumou plays on the border of abstraction and recognizable reality and the interface of photography and other forms of visual art. She constructs work with layers of paper placed over and next to each other, and in this she is mostly concerned with the main elements of photography: light, paper and the perception of reality. She is constantly stretching the boundaries of photography. She explores the workings of our minds; how little information we need to create our own reality.

Popel Coumou (b. 1978) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2004. Since then, she has exhibited worldwide and her work has been included in the collections of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Huis Marseille, FOAM Amsterdam, AkzoNobel and various ministries and private collections, among others. Besides her autonomous work, she has also worked on commission for Hèrmes, Amsterdam UMC, Hilton Amsterdam, Mercure Hotels and Air France Magazine, among others. In recent years, her work has been shown at Keijsers Koning Gallery Dallas, TORCH gallery Amsterdam, Fotomuseum Den Haag, Museum Hilversum and Escher in het Paleis, among others.
